Orchestrating Excellence for Hans Zimmer Live

In 2024, the Hans Zimmer Live tour brought the acclaimed composer’s iconic film scores to audiences across North America, featuring innovative production design that merged orchestral performance with cutting-edge visual technology.

Central to this production was the implementation of advanced LED video technology powered by Brompton Technology’s 4K Tessera SX40 LED processors, which delivered exceptional image quality and seamless integration of video elements throughout the immersive show experience.

The production team had the opportunity to create an all-new visual experience that would match the scale and emotional depth of Hans Zimmer’s orchestral arrangements. With more than 45 musicians on stage, the team needed to transform a relatively small-scale band into a visually captivating arena experience. Additionally, they needed to integrate live camera feeds (i-Mag) with cinematic content from the original films in a way that would complement rather than distract from the live performance.

An important design consideration was integrating multiple large-scale systems — video, audio, and lighting — into a cohesive, touring-friendly package that could be consistently deployed across different arena venues. This required exceptional coordination between technical teams and careful consideration of setup and teardown processes.

• ChromaTune: The production team leveraged Brompton’s advanced colour correction capabilities to match the specific colour palettes from Zimmer’s films, creating visual cohesion between the LED displays and the orchestral performance.

• Tessera Management Software: The Tessera SX40’s processing capabilities allowed for simultaneous management of multiple video sources, including live camera inputs that were colour-graded and processed with Notch effects in real-time.

One of the primary technical challenges was incorporating live camera feeds into the artistic design without making them seem disconnected from the overall visual aesthetic. As Video Designer Peter Nigrini noted, “Because there are no dedicated i-Mag screens, the i-Mag appears embedded in a frame of content or as part of an aesthetic of the overall content design.”

The video team utilised Tessera SX40 LED processors paired with Disguise’s RenderStream technology to process multiple camera feeds simultaneously through custom Notch patches, allowing each musical section to have its own visual treatment that responded directly to the performance.

LMG Touring, the production vendor for the tour, deployed over 14 AIDA-HD3G-NDI-200 POV cameras across the stage, giving audiences intimate views of the performers. The integration of bar count monitors for the orchestra is another key element, providing real-time score information to ensure synchronisation across the large ensemble.

The successful integration of Brompton LED video processing helped create an extraordinary visual experience that complemented Hans Zimmer’s musical performance. The production achieved its goal of creating varied visual environments that reflected the distinct colour palettes and emotional qualities of each film score, from the desert tones of Dune to the oceanic colours of Pirates of the Caribbean.

The sophisticated video system allowed audiences to connect with both the music and the musicians while experiencing visual elements from the original films, creating what Lighting Designer John Featherstone described as “a visual world, a memory of the original film and the ability to focus on the live performance.”
