Project Overview:

Eminem’s music video for Houdini, the lead single from his album The Death of Slim Shady, earned a nomination for Best Music Video at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, showcasing groundbreaking visual storytelling powered by Brompton Technology’s 4K Tessera SX40 LED video processors.

An advanced virtual production (VP) setup created a seamless aesthetic for the global rap icon that resonated with audiences worldwide, with the video becoming an instant viral sensation and racking up over 200 million views on YouTube upon release.

The Challenge:

To visualise the time-travelling narrative of Eminem’s alter ego Slim Shady re-emerging in the present day, director Rich Lee and the team at Los Angeles-based Synapse needed a solution that could deliver stunning image quality, real-time flexibility, and support the creative demands of complex scene transitions. The project also required a massive LED volume with exacting colour performance and minimal post-production burden.

The Solution

Synapse deployed a fully integrated VP workflow that offered both scale and flexibility, using:

  • Approximately 1,800 AOTO Electronics RM 2.3 LED tiles, configured at an ultra-wide resolution of 15,552 x 2,808 pixels, creating a visually rich, immersive canvas
  • 11 Brompton 4K Tessera SX40 LED processors, enabling seamless integration of real and virtual elements and ensuring superior image performance throughout production

We couldn’t have achieved the exceptional technical quality of this video without the support of Brompton’s industry-leading processors. The integration of real-time virtual environments, combined with Brompton’s powerful LED processing, allowed us to create a visually stunning and seamless production.” – Geoff Knight, CTO at Synapse

Brompton Features Used

The Houdini production team leveraged key advanced features of Brompton’s Tessera software to meet the project’s creative and technical demands:

  • Extended Bit Depth: Provided enhanced on-camera performance by delivering deeper blacks and greater dynamic range, helping the team achieve rich contrast and visual clarity throughout the massive 15,552 x 2,808px LED canvas, which was critical for scenes with challenging lighting and fast movement.
  • Stacking: Simplified control of the 11 Brompton SX40 processors by allowing them to be managed as a unified system.
  • ShutterSync®: Optimised the coordination between LED refresh rates and camera shutter speeds, ensuring flicker-free capture even during complex performance sequences.
  • Genlock feature ensured perfect synchronisation between the LED wall and camera system, eliminating artefacts and supporting smooth, stable visuals across dual-role performance scenes.
Technical Challenges:

Capturing Eminem in dual roles within a fast-moving, VP-led narrative required visual consistency, low-latency responsiveness, and rock-solid synchronisation across a large-format LED wall. Managing such an expansive canvas – 15,552 x 2,808 pixels across around 1,800 tiles – demanded robust processing power.

Brompton’s Tessera LED processors provided the real-time control, colour precision, and processing reliability needed to keep both the creative and technical teams operating seamlessly under tight deadlines.

Outcome

The Houdini music video is now one of Eminem’s most successful visual releases in recent years, combining strong narrative storytelling with next-generation production tools. Synapse leveraged virtual production techniques, next-gen visual effects, and pioneering AI to deliver a groundbreaking creation that resurrects the legendary Slim Shady from his 2000s heyday.

The VP workflow reduced the need for traditional sets and locations, allowing more resources to go directly into creative execution. The flexibility of Brompton’s LED processing system gave the production team full control over lighting and scene dynamics, contributing to a polished, cinematic result that resonated with fans and industry alike.

We’ve had the privilege of working with Eminem for over 15 years, creating some of his most iconic music videos and world tour content. When Eminem asked me to direct this video, we knew we needed to push the boundaries of technology and storytelling. The Grammy nomination and 200+ million views reinforce the fact that virtual production truly is the future of premium content creation at an award-winning level.
