Project Overview:

In November 2024, multi-disciplinary video and sound artist Anyma (a.k.a. Italian-American DJ and producer Matteo Milleri) brought his groundbreaking show Genesys to Australia for the first time at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse.

Known for creating immersive visual experiences where humans, technology, and nature fuse in futuristic utopias, Anyma’s Australian debut promised to deliver the biggest deployment of a single LED screen for entertainment the country had ever witnessed, and was powered by Brompton Technology’s advanced LED processing capabilities.

The Challenge:

WOOHAH, Melbourne’s leading production company, received an extraordinary brief that simply asked one question: how big can you go? With no specific brand, model, or size requirements in the rider, the challenge was to create a visual canvas worthy of Anyma’s reputation for spectacular immersive experiences.

The team needed to coordinate an enormous LED structure that would require precise engineering for safety, meticulous planning for assembly, and robust processing power to handle the high-resolution content that would bring Anyma’s artistic vision to life. The outdoor venue at Flemington Racecourse added additional layers of complexity, requiring extensive wind bracing and weather-resistant solutions.

The Solution

WOOHAH delivered a truly massive solution that set new benchmarks for LED screen deployment in Australia:

  • LED Canvas: The team constructed a 40.2m wide by 19.2m high LED screen, running approximately 23.5 million pixels and weighing 33 tonnes as a single display surface.
  • ROE Visual Carbon Mark II Panels: The screen utilised ROE Visual’s advanced Carbon Mark II panels mounted on T4 touring frames, providing the high resolution and reliability required for Anyma’s detailed visual content.
  • Brompton Technology Tessera SX40 Processors: Five 4K Tessera SX40 processors powered the enormous display, with 10 Tessera XD data distribution units managing the complex signal distribution and ensuring seamless visual performance across the entire 23.5 million pixel canvas.
  • Robust Infrastructure: The structure required 200 linear metres of truss for wind bracing alone, with 24 two-tonne motors and individual load cells for precise weight monitoring and safety management.
  • Advanced Signal Chain: Content delivery utilised four Barco E2 controllers feeding the Brompton processors, with Anyma’s team running their primary Pixera media server supported by WOOHAH’s custom-built 4K Resolume backup server, all connected via Riedel MediorNet MicroN UHD fibre optic transport.

Brompton Features Used

  • ChromaTune: Powerful and intuitive colour correction with 14-way Colour Corrector, Colour Replace and Colour Curves.
  • Stacking: Allows multiple processors in a setup to be controlled together in unison.
  • OSCA: User interface overlayed on LED wall allows panels to be quickly matched, regardless of model or batch difference.
  • PureTone: Eliminates unsightly colour casts in greyscale for balanced, neutral output.
  • ThermaCal: Real-time compensation for thermal artefacts such as pink/cyan pin-cushioning, and gradients due to swapped modules.
Technical Challenges:

The five Tessera SX40 processors required perfect synchronisation, achieved through Brompton’s Stacking feature which allowed unified control, significantly reducing operational complexity. The outdoor environment’s temperature fluctuations were automatically compensated by ThermaCal technology, preventing colour shifts and visual distortions across different sections of the screen, while OSCA (On-Screen Colour Adjustment) proved invaluable for quickly calibrating and matching panels from different production batches directly on the LED wall, ensuring perfectly uniform colour response across the entire display surface.

Engineering a 33-tonne LED structure for outdoor deployment required extensive collaboration between WOOHAH, Gig Control, Cliftons Productions, and Showtech Australia. Weight management was critical throughout the project, with each component carefully calculated and monitored. The load cells provided real-time feedback on motor loading, allowing the team to monitor wind effects on the structure and ensure safety parameters were maintained.

The assembly process required precision, with the screen construction taking two full days using a methodical layer-by-layer approach. The ROE Visual T4 touring frames, while adding significant weight, provided the structural integrity necessary for the massive deployment.

Outcome

The successful deployment created Australia’s largest single LED screen for entertainment, delivering an extraordinary visual platform for Anyma’s Genesys experience. The massive display provided the perfect canvas for Anyma’s artistry, creating a futuristic visual environment that matched the scale and ambition of his internationally acclaimed performances.

The precision engineering and careful planning resulted in flawless technical execution, with the enormous structure built, operated, and dismantled safely within the project timeline. This collaboration between WOOHAH and the various production teams showcased the Australian production industry’s ability to deliver world-class technical solutions for international touring artists.

Brompton is the gold standard for LED processing in high-end events, particularly in the touring and outdoor events segment. Flexibility, stability, speed, and intuitive control are critical requirements, and Brompton delivers on all fronts, every time. Being able to utilise fibre and XD boxes with the screen massively streamlined our infrastructure deployment, saving valuable time during install to deliver the system safely ahead of schedule.
Ben Nickel – Head of Touring and Project Manager for Anyma’s Melbourne show
Brompton LED processing definitely made a difference in how this project was delivered. The scalability of stacking the processors provided a very clean and intuitive data distribution solution. OSCA was my favourite feature on this project, being able to correct all the small nuances and transform the whole surface into a single uniform and colour-accurate surface was really impressive. I had reached out to Brompton during the build process, and the response from the support team was not only helpful, but the response times were superb. A great product with great support, even from the other side of the world.
